Best Eco-Friendly Hotel: The Cliffs at Princeville in Princeville, Hawaii
The Cliffs at Princeville
The Cliffs at Princeville, located on 22 acres of Kauai's North Shore, has won recognition for its sustainability achievements. Renewable energy powers the resort by more than 50%, LED lights are in use, over 30% of their waste is recycled, and their water conservation program supports reusable containers over bottled water.
The resort’s progressive sustainability program addresses climate change and resiliency, operations and community engagement, energy consumption and renewable energy production, land use and maintenance, water use and conservation, waste management, and recycling. And when I interviewed General Manager Jim Braman in September, it turns out that sustainability applies to humans as well as the earth — after doing a salary survey, he and his management team had just given the entire staff a raise. This gesture, coming out of a global pandemic, is nothing short of revolutionary, and it speaks to the resort’s desire to create long-term relationships with the people who will enact their overarching goals.
Hawaiʻi has been on a mission to welcome visitors back to its islands with mindful awareness about the ways in which tourism can help or harm a place. The statewide mālama initiative encourages visitors to give back to the islands we love so much, and we’re seeing each island’s spin on this concept grow by leaps and bounds each year.
$100 Energy Surcharge and Hawaii TAT State tax collected on-site. No elevators or air-conditioning on-site.
